Where did all the firewall alerts go?
By the ZoneAlarm team
Good news, ZoneAlarm Free Firewall users: if you are running the latest version, you are seeing 97% fewer pop-up alerts!
Some of you will say, “Good!” and stop reading right there.
Others want to know more. “Does that mean ZoneAlarm isn’t controlling who sends data from my PC to the Internet anymore?”
No, quite the opposite. ZoneAlarm Free Firewall still makes sure that only trustworthy programs can talk to the Internet, but now it uses our cloud-based advisor system to automatically determine program safety for you.
Let’s say you download a new game that needs to use the Internet to do its thing. As soon it tries to talk to the network, ZoneAlarm checks the game against a program safety database and automatically grants appropriate Internet access.
Our cloud-based database, DefenseNet, is updated constantly, so chances are that we know whether your game is trustworthy or hackerware. In fact, our technology tracks how long programs have been public, how many people use them, and other security data. But, if ZoneAlarm has never heard of your game, you’ll see an alert that gives you the choice to allow or deny the game access to the Internet.
But what if you LIKE alerts?
If you would like to be the one who grants or denies all program access the Internet, you can take back that power. Here’s how:
Open ZoneAlarm and click Program Control.
Then, move the SmartDefense Advisor slider to Manual, so it looks like this:
That’s it. Now you will be alerted.
If at any time you tire of the pop-up alerts, just move that slider back to the Auto setting and let ZoneAlarm do the work:
